Is it possible to build a home using only recycled materials and save a bunch of money as well as helping the planet?
Eco-friendly shipping container homes have been created before but they’re not always built with re-used materials.
Tony Hurd grew up around shipping containers in his native San Francisco and probably never thought he would live in one someday.
That changed when he was given 2 of them and started cutting holes in the sides.
This story is about more than just converting shipping containers.
It’s about one man’s amazing ability to turn other peoples junk into a comfortable home.
His commitment to using recycled materials even extended to the plant pots which were made using sewer tubes Tony picked up from a resource centre.
Regular visits to resource centres and flea markets meant Tony found a whole range of castaway items and added to the homes features over time.
One such feature is the container roof, it’s far from boring.
Tony’s mother and grandmother had a love for plants but never had the space to grow them. That was the inspiration for him to create a roof garden complete with greenhouse.
The roof is a place where he can relax thanks to a gazebo he installed, as you might expect it was all made using left over materials or items he sourced from resource centres.
The result: a low cost and eco-friendly constructed container home that might inspire others
Don’t be afraid, it’s not impossible is Tony’s message to anyone who wants to build a shipping container home of their own.
If you’re on a tight budget building a container home cheaply is possible when you’re using recycled materials.
And if you’ve got even a pinch of the creativity Tony has it might just end up looking better than a shiny new one.
